Is Your Throat Chakra Blocked?
Is your Throat Chakra blocked? You’ve probably never been asked that question in normal conversation- and most likely you haven’t posed that question to anyone else. If you have checked out the other posts in the series, you know that we are taking an introductory look at the 7 Main Chakras. We continue our exploration as we take a look at the 5th Chakra- The Throat Chakra or Vishuddha. The Sanskrit translation is purification or pure. The Throat Chakra is located at the base of the throat-at the center of the larynx.
As you may guess it plays a role in our communication, as well as self expression and creativity. It is the space where we find our voice, speak up, and be heard. But, not just for ourselves- for others as well. It is associated with the color blue and the element ether. I mentioned earlier in this series that even if you are not “into” the Chakras, it is a wonderful opportunity to take a look at the various attributes, reflect on our strengths/weaknesses, and look at ways to help us balance our life and just simply find more joy in the everyday.

6 Simple Tips To Help Balance The Throat Chakra
1. Color
There has been research on the effects of color and psychological functioning, take a look here if you are interested. Or, this article may be of interest to you: The Color Blue: Meaning and Psychology Focus on the color blue in your environment- surround yourself with blue, wear blue clothing, or jewelry. Or here is a Throat Chakra Healing Kit from Etsy : Throat Chakra Crystal Set
2. Focus On The Breath
You may choose to simply sit quietly for a few minutes and breathe in and out as you focus on the sensations in the throat and the sound of your breath. Or, you may be interested in trying out a breathing technique called Lion’s Breath. Simply put, you inhale through your nose. Then, you open your eyes and mouth wide, stick out your tongue, and breathe out audibly with a bit of a “roar”. You may feel a bit silly- but it is actually quite effective. If you would like some more detailed information, take a look at this resource I found:
3. Meditation
Before you think that you can’t do this- know that meditation can come in many forms and it doesn’t involve sitting on the floor for 30 minutes and completely clearing your mind. You can meditate anywhere and anytime and there is no strict protocol for it. You can start with 3-5 minutes and go from there. Try out this Guided Meditation for Throat Chakra that I found or check out this resource that I have mentioned before for getting started with meditation.
4. Mantras
Mantras can be powerful and simple ways to help improve our self confidence, help with stress management, help us stay grounded- the list goes on and on. I have referenced this article before but it has some science behind the power of positive affirmations and mantras. Here are a few mantras with a focus on the Throat Chakra. You can start by simply repeating one that may resonate with you a few times throughout the day:
My voice matters
My thoughts are kind to myself and others
I speak with a clear and confident voice
I am open to communication and understanding
5. Journaling
This can be an easy way to help you get your thoughts out of your head and organize your ideas so that you can communicate more effectively. There are many ways to journal. There are many options out there for journaling. Don’t think that you have to produce multiple paragraphs either. You can even start by making lists- of anything really. Just get some thoughts out of your head, get them organized, or as a practice of letting them go. You may enjoy these journals from Promptly Journals:
6. Sound Baths
You may or may not have heard of this, but it is worth taking a look. In a nutshell, it is the immersion of yourself not in water- but in sound vibrations. The idea is that sound vibrations at certain frequencies can help heal the body. There is of course a bit more to it, but here is a resource that I found that may be of interest to you if you just want to try it out: What Is A Sound Bath?
Just like a yoga studio, you can find places to do this practice in person. If that is not possible, there are always at home options. If you would like to try it out – take a look at this video that I found. There are many out there, but this one is around 9 minutes if you would like to give it a quick try. All you have to do is get yourself into a comfortable position of your choice and just listen- and breathe: Throat Chakra Sound Bath
